Ski free at Kawartha Nordic

January 7, 2016

Our good friends at Kawartha Nordic are happy to welcome you to a free day of skiing on their trails. In a reciprocal agreement between HHNTA and Kawartha Nordic, your seasons pass is good for one free day of skiing on the excellent trails maintained by the Kawartha Nordic Ski Club. Just show your yellow button at the trailhead, or sign in during self-serve hours and note that you are a HHNTA season pass holder.

We are happy to welcome their season pass holders for a free day of skiing as well. If you see some folks from KNSC, make sure you give them a Haliburton welcome (minus the moose call and the Scottish dancing bit).

Enjoying the fruits of summer labor.

January 5, 2016

Some of you that have seen him disappearing into Glebe Park, pushing a wheelbarrow full of tools, may wonder what Mike Darlington does everyday in the summer. He works on the ski trails so that we can open them with the smallest amount of snow possible!

If you were one of the smiling skiers that got out for the first few days of skiing in Glebe, you know that the 3.5 Km loop (the main trail up to Peter Rabbit, across the Peter Rabbit and back down the main trail) is much smoother than the rest of the trails, which means we can groom them earlier. This is the result of many hours of ditching, filling, and grading.

Mike is not alone in this endeavor. Several other volunteers have chipped in with time and effort. The good folks at Dysart et al have also begun to pitch in. Over the past 2 summers, the municipality has donated many loads of gravel, as well as several days of machine and staff time to move large amounts of fill onto the trails.

When you have been itching to get on the boards, it’s easy to forget the amount of time and effort that makes early-season skiing possible. Thanks to all the folks that make it possible!

Ski season is here! Help out the groomers!

January 2, 2016

Our intrepid crew of  volunteers have been at it again, putting in many hours over the past few days to get as much trail open as possible. Big thanks to all the groomer drivers and branch clippers!

Going for a ski? Take some hand pruners with you and clip those ice laden branches that are hanging down, (faceslappers the groomers call them…..not with affection). If you can reach from the trail, feel free to clip it off: the groomers thank you.

Top 10 reasons to cross country ski

December 3, 2015

Great list, courtesy of Len and Kit Pizzey. It doesn’t mention getting to wear lycra, but I guess that is assumed 😉

10. According to exercise physiologists…the best cardiovascular exercise known. Studies show physical and mental effects of exercise as good as many medications.

9.  Uses a large percentage of muscle mass and is more efficient and effective than using legs or arms alone

8. Low impact, reducing loading of joints so great for those with arthritis

7. Gliding over uneven surfaces improves your body’s ability to perceive its position in space: proprioception

6.  Weight shift while gliding on snow improves balance which is important as we age to prevent falls.

5.  Increases cardiac output and oxygen carrying capacity of your blood i.e.. improves your cardiac fitness.

4.  Improves visual acuity: your ability to sense terrain changes and snow undulations in bright and low light conditions.

3.  Improves self esteem and confidence.  Enjoying a ski will help you feel healthier and happier and more invigorated due to increased blood flow and heightened senses.

2.  Skiing helps to cultivate an appreciation for our surroundings and environment.  Quality time on our trails on a beautiful winters day helps us all appreciate the natural world we often take for granted.

1.  Skiing with friends and family is a great bonding opportunity resulting in stronger relationships.  This reduces stress in our daily lives and gives us an opportunity to recharge our batteries.

Membership registration, jackrabbit sign-up, and Buffs!

November 12, 2015

Membership and jackrabbit registration is now open for the 2015-2016 ski season! Online registration is up and running, with several ways to pay: online, by mail, or in person at the AGM: November 14th, 10 AM, Sir Sandford Fleming College. If you prefer to register in person for either memberships or Jackrabbit, we will be set-up to do that at the AGM this Saturday.

HHNTA Buffs are available! Be the fashion envy of everyone you know and support the Jackrabbit program in the process. Don’t know what a Buff is? (Where have you been?) It’s a multi-use HHNTABuffhat, face mask, neck gaiter, sweatband, hair controller, fashion accessory. Here’s a video if you are at work and want to waste some time.  You can pick yours up at the AGM, or order them when you register. If neither of those options works for you, contact Joleen, our intrepid membership coordinator, and she will hook you up: membership@skihaliburton.com
